What are the side effects of mafenide cream?

The side effects of mafenide cream can be difficult to distinguish from the effects of the burn it is being used to treat. The most common side effect is irritation at the site of application. Other possible effects include:

  • chest pain
  • fast heartbeat
  • headaches
  • confusion
  • nausea
  • changes in appetite

Serious side effects include: acidosis and respiratory problems such as hyperventilation. While reducing bacterial growth, mafenide may cause fungal growth, although this is rare in burn wounds. A handful of known fatalities have been associated with treatment from mafenide cream; these have been due to porphyria, bone marrow depression and hemolytic anemia. Mafenide cream contains sulfonamides, which may cause allergic reactions in some people.
