What should I know about mafenide cream before using it?

Before using mafenide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients (including preservatives such as parabens and sulfites), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially lung problems (e.g., asthma), kidney disease, metabolism problems (e.g., glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency-G6PD) and blood disorders.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. While reducing bacterial growth, mafenide may cause fungal growth, although this is rare in burn wounds.
