What precautions should I take with aminophylline?

Tell your doctor about every allergy you have, especially medications.

Take a list of your prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, nutritional supplements and herbs you take to your doctor, including a list of everything that contains ephedrine, epinephrine, phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine. These medications can increase the side effects of aminophylline.

Tell your doctor if you take allopurinol (Zyloprim), azithromycin (Zithromax) carbamazepine (Tegretol), cimetidine (Tagamet), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), clarithromycin (Biaxin), diuretics ('water pills'), erythromycin, lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid), oral contraceptives, phenytoin (Dilantin), prednisone (Deltasone), propranolol (Inderal), rifampin (Rifadin), tetracycline (Sumycin) or other medications for an infection or heart disease.

When you talk with your doctor, discuss your health history, including past seizures, heart disease, an overactive or underactive thyroid gland, high blood pressure, liver disease or if you have ever abused alcohol. Your doctor needs to know if you breastfeed, are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Let your doctor know if you become pregnant while taking aminophylline.

If you plan to have surgery, including dental work, tell the doctor or dentist that you take aminophylline. Tell your doctor if you smoke or use other tobacco products. Tobacco may affect the effectiveness of aminophylline.

Aminophylline is sometimes used to treat breathing problems in premature infants. But this drug may also pose some risks for your child. Talk to your doctor first about your baby's condition.
