What is Advair HFA?

Advair HFA is a prescription medication used to treat asthma and, if a doctor says it's appropriate, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Advair HFA contains two medications: a corticosteroid and a long-acting bronchodilator. The corticosteroid (fluticasone) reduces inflammation in the lungs, and the bronchodilator (salmeterol) widens air passages in the lungs. Advair HFA comes as a canister of liquid that's sprayed and then inhaled through the inhaler device.

To use Advair HFA, you first prime the inhaler by shaking it for five seconds and pumping the canister down to spray away from your face. You repeat this process three more times to make sure it's ready. When you're ready to use it, you shake the inhaler for five seconds, breathe out completely, and place the inhaler in your mouth. You should press the canister down while you breathe in slowly. Then you hold your breath for about 10 seconds, remove your mouth from the inhaler, and breathe out slowly. If your doctor instructs you to take more than one spray at once, wait 30 seconds and repeat the process. Always rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after taking Advair HFA. You should take this medication according to your doctor's prescription, usually twice a day with 12 hours between doses.
