How is omalizumab used to treat asthma?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Omalizumab (Xolair) blocks the body's immune response to common airborne allergens. This reduces inflammation and asthma symptoms. This drug is an option for people who have allergies and poorly controlled, moderate to severe asthma. It is also an option for people who have side effects with corticosteroids. Omalizumab is given every 2 or 4 weeks by injection.
