What is isotretinoin?

Isotretinoin is used to treat severe, disfiguring nodular acne that has not been helped by other treatments, such as antibiotics. Isotretinoin is in a class of medications called retinoids. It is a form of vitamin A and reduces the secretions of oil in your skin to help skin regeneration. Isotretinoin is available only under a registered distribution program called the iPLEDGE™ program. This medication can cause life-threatening and disfiguring birth defects in the children of women who use this medication, so it is extremely important that you use effective birth control while taking this medication. Isotretinoin is available under the brands Amnesteem, Claravis and Sotret.
