What is azelaic acid?

Azelaic acid is the active ingredient in the brand-name drugs Finacea and Azelex. Azelaic acid treats the skin conditions acne and rosacea. Azelaic acid is an acid that occurs naturally in the skin. It kills the bacteria that cause acne and rosacea and promotes skin renewal, thus reducing the formation of pimples and blackheads. Azelaic acid is a prescription medication that comes in the form of a gel or cream, which is applied after washing your face, usually twice a day. You should only use as much as your doctor prescribes. Avoid getting the azelaic acid in your eyes and mouth. It may take several weeks to see results with azelaic acid, so keep using it as your doctor prescribes.
