What is topical sodium sulfacetamide (10%) and sulfur (5%)?

Sodium sulfacetamide (10%) and sulfur (5%) is available only by prescription. Trade names for the combination include: Avar, Avar-E Emollient and Avar-E-Green. It is also known as Claris, Clenia, Plexion, Rosanil, Rosac, Sumaxin, Zetacet, Clarifoam and B.P. Cleansing Wash. It is a keratolytic agent and is used to treat acne vulgaris, acne rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis. Sodium sulfacetamide antagonizes PABA, a component essential for folic acid synthesis. Its sulfur component prohibits the growth of fatty acids and the acne-forming bacteria. The combination of sodium sulfacetamide and sulfur is available as lotion, cream, cleanser, pads and foam.
