What should I know before using topical sulfur to treat skin conditions?

There are several things you know before using sulfur to treat a skin condition:
  • To avoid skin irritation, do not use products that can dry your skin, such as makeup, soaps and other items with alcohol.
  • Avoid abrasive soaps and cleansers, topical acne medication (those applied directly to your skin) and other products that can cause skin to peel, including medicated makeup, and other topical medications. Using these items may also result in significant skin irritation.
  • Do not use sulfur on sun or windburned skin, dry or chapped skin or skin that is already irritated.
  • Do not apply mercury-containing products on areas where you have applied a sulfur product. This combination can cause skin irritation, skin discoloration (blackening) or an unpleasant odor.
