Who should take pentamidine?

If you have a compromised immune system due to HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy for cancer, bone marrow or organ transplant, or frequent corticosteroid use, you may need to take pentamidine to prevent pneumocystis pneumonia. You can also take pentamidine to treat an existing pneumocystis pneumonia infection, West African trypanosomiasis (African sleeping sickness), and the parasitic disease leishmaniasis. Pentamidine injections are safe for use in adults and children, and inhaled pentamidine may be used by adults and children older than five years.
