Who should not take mefloquine?

Children younger than 6 months of age, or weighing less than 44 pounds, should not take mefloquine. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should alert their doctors before starting or continuing to take mefloquine. Those with a history of mental illness or heart, liver or kidney disease, should also talk to their doctors before having mefloquine prescribed for them. Mefloquine poses a risk if you are allergic to it or similar drugs, such as quinine or quinidine.
