Who should not use ethambutol?

Doctors will typically not prescribe this drug to people who have a condition called optic neuritis. This disease occurs when the nerve that connects the eye to the brain becomes inflamed. Ethambutol could worsen this condition. The drug shouldn't be given to people who may not be capable of reporting a change in their vision, such as young children.

Anyone with an allergy to the medication should not take it.
