What is Mepron?

Mepron is a brand name of the active ingredient atovaquone which is used orally to treat and prevent Pneumocystis jiroveci (formerly P. carinii) pneumonia (PCP). This organism causes a serious form of pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems caused by HIV infection, prevention of organ transplantation rejection or cancer chemotherapy. Mepron is given to people who are unable to take other medications for PCP. It works by inhibiting the formation of pyrimidine, which kills the pneumocystis organisms.
