What is Daraprim?

Daraprim is the brand name for the active ingredient pyrimethamine, an oral antiparasitic medication. It is used with chloroquine or a sulfonamide to kill susceptible parasites that cause malaria, Plasmodium falciparum and P. malariae. Daraprim can be combined with other medications, such as the sulfonamide sulfadiazine, to treat an infection caused by susceptible strains of Toxoplasma gondii. The people who typically develop symptoms or complications of toxoplasmosis are those with weakened immune systems due to AIDS, cancer or certain medications. Daraprim kills parasites that cause these diseases and prevents them from spreading in the body.
