What are artemether and lumefantrine tablets?

Artemether-lumefantrine is a two-drug combination that is used to treat uncomplicated cases of malaria. The cause of malaria is infection by Plasmodium species, a parasite typically transmitted by mosquito bites. Coartem is known to be effective against Plasmodium falciparum and most likely P. vivax parasites in the blood. This medication works by killing the malaria parasite. It is not effective against dormant parasites in the liver. Artemether-lumefantrine is sold under the brand name Coartem.
