What should I know about Rifadin before taking it?

Before taking Rifadin (rifampin), let your doctor know about all medications you take. Rifadin can have interactions with many medications, including but not limited to:

  • diazepam
  • acetaminophen
  • steroids
  • HIV medicines
  • methadone
  • oral diabetes medication
  • beta-blockers
  • blood thinners

Rifadin does not treat viral infections like the flu or the common cold. You should not take Rifadin while wearing contact lenses, because Rifadin can cause discolored tears that may stain soft contacts. Also, Rifadin can make oral contraceptives less effective. Rifadin should be taken 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after a meal with a full glass of water. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medication early as this will decrease the effects of the medication.
