How does Aralen work?

Experts do not know the exact way in which Aralen (chloroquine) kills the parasite that causes malaria. It is thought that the drug prevents the parasite from reproducing. Aralen is effective against the parasites when they are inside the red blood cells but not when they are outside the red blood cells. The species of malaria parasite that are susceptible to Aralan are:

  • Plasmodium vivax
  • Plasmodium malariae
  • Plasmodium ovale
  • susceptible strains of Plasmodium falciparum (some strains are resistant to Aralen)
