Aralen (chloroquine) tablets should be taken exactly as directed by the doctor. It is taken by mouth and is taken with food to reduce GI upset. The dose depends upon the reason you are taking the drug:
- To help prevent malaria, adults usually take one 500 milligram (mg.) tablet per week on the same day. For children, the dosage is 5 milligrams for each kilogram of body weight once a week. For full protection, you should begin taking the medicine two weeks before potential exposure to malaria.
- To treat an acute attack of malaria, adults usually take 1 gram (g) followed by 500 mgs. at six to eight hours, and 500 mg. again on days two and three. For children, the dosage is 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, followed by 5 mg. per kilogram of body weight at six to eight hours and again on days two and three.
