Why would my doctor prescribe tipranavir?

Tipranavir (Aptivus) is used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Tipranavir is one of a class of drugs called protease inhibitors, which slow the spread of HIV in the body. However, tipranavir does not cure HIV, the virus that causes AIDs.

Tipranavir must be taken with another drug, called ritonavir (Norvir).
