Who should take lamivudine and zidovudine?

Lamivudine-zidovudine (Combivir) is intended for people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This includes people with all stages of the infection, including the most severe form, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is used in combination with other medications to decrease the chances of HIV becoming resistant to the therapy. Lamivudine-zidovudine may also be used "off-label" for the treatment of someone who has just been exposed to the HIV virus. This is called post-exposure prophylaxis, and it is used to help prevent the virus from becoming an established HIV infection.
