What is Viread?

Viread is the brand name for tenofovir, an antiretroviral drug used along with other medications to treat people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It works by interfering with HIV replication in the body. It also may reduce damage done to the immune system. Viread is not a cure for HIV or for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is caused by HIV. However, Viread may postpone the development of health problems related to HIV infection and AIDS. Viread may also be prescribed to treat chronic hepatitis B infection.
