People who take lamivudine (Epivir) can develop lactic acidosis, a condition in which lactic acid builds up in the bloodstream. Lactic acid is produced when oxygen levels in the body drop. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include:

  • loss of appetite
  • feeling very tired
  • weakness
  • dark yellow or brown urine
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • flu-like symptoms
  • yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
  • stomach pain (upper right part)
