What is zidovudine?

Zidovudine is the active ingredient in the brand name antiretroviral drug Retrovir, a reverse transcriptase inhibitor used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Zidovudine works by interfering with the replication of HIV. Zidovudine is not a cure for HIV infection and will not stop HIV from being spread to others. However, zidovudine may be taken to prevent an HIV-positive pregnant woman from spreading HIV to her unborn baby. Zidovudine is available in syrup, capsule, tablet and injection forms.
