What is tipranavir?

Tipranavir, the name of the active ingredient in the brand name Aptivus, is a medication to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Topranavir is an HIV protease inhibitor. HIV protease is an enzyme involved in the replication of the HIV virus. Tipranavir is always taken with another protease inhibitor known as ritonavir. The blood levels of tipranavir are 30-fold higher when taken with ritonavir. These two medications are usually taken with two or more additional anti-HIV drugs as well. Together, these medications work to reduce the amount of HIV virus in your body.
