What is Retrovir IV?

Retrovir IV is the brand name of the intravenous form of the drug zidovudine, a reverse transcriptase inhibitor. This antiretroviral medication helps prevent HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) from replicating by interfering with an enzyme that the virus needs to replicate. It slows viral progression in the body but is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Retrovir IV also may be used as a preventive measure to stop infection of a fetus by a mother infected with HIV. Retrovir IV is administered by injection.
