What is lamivudine?

Lamivudine is the active ingredient in Epivir, an antiretroviral drug. It is used to treat people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and for people with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), which means it diminishes these viruses' ability to reproduce by disabling an enzyme they use to make DNA. Lamivudine can be very effective, especially in combination with other drugs. However, it can sometimes worsen HIV or HBV infections, especially when both are already present.
