What is Epivir?

Epivir is the brand name medication containing the active ingredient lamivudine. It is a prescription antiviral oral drug used to treat infections caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A form of the drug, Epivir-HBV, is used to treat the hepatitis B virus. It is available in liquid or tablet form. Epivir is used in combination with other medications to treat HIV. It works by keeping the virus from replicating and delays the immune system suppression that occurs with HIV and AIDS. It does not cure HIV or hepatitis B, but rather delays the effects and progression of these diseases. Epivir is classified as a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor.
