Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate(Truvada) is a combination of two medicines that are used in treating Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the illness that results from uncontrolled HIV. The virus makes you sick by attacking your immune system, making it hard for you to fight off other infections. Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate decrease the amount of HIV in your body, which makes you immune system stronger, but the medicine does not cure HIV infection. Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate both belong to the class of medicines called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, and work by stopping the virus from using a protein in your body to help itself multiply. It is not known if Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate can reduce the risk of giving HIV to another person. You must take the medicine regularly for it to keep working.
