Is it safe to take nevirapine while pregnant?

Nevirapine is considered a pregnancy Category B medication, which means that the medication has not been tested in pregnant women. Nevirapine was tested in animal studies and showed it did not hurt the fetus. Medications in animals often behave differently in people. For this reason, nevirapine is only prescribed to pregnant women by the doctor if the benefits of the medication outweigh the risks to the unborn child. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant while taking nevirapine. This medication has been shown to appear in breast milk. Women with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) who are on this medication are strongly discouraged from breastfeeding to prevent the transmission of HIV and the medication to the infant.
