Is Epivir safe for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding?

Epivir (lamivudine) is not recommended for women who are pregnant, may become pregnant or who are breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary. Research indicates that there is the potential for harm to the fetus. Studies have found that Epivir is passed through breast milk. Since HIV is also passed through breast milk, it is recommended that women not breastfeed if they have HIV.
