Is Combivir safe for breast-feeding or pregnant women?

Generally, women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are advised not to breast-feed their infants, as HIV does pass through breast milk to a nursing child. Combivir also passes into breast milk. Studies have not yet concluded whether Combivir is harmful to a fetus during pregnancy. The FDA classifies Combivir as a Category C pregnancy drug. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant prior to taking Combivir and your doctor can help you decide if Combivir is right for you.
