What should I know about taking tipranavir with other medications?

When taking tipranavir (Aptivus), used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), take it with your dose of ritonavir two times a day. Take the medications about the same time every day.

There are some drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, that you should not take with tipranavir. For instance, do not take antacids at the same time as tipranavir. Take them one hour before or two hours after taking tipranavir.

Another human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment called didanosine should not be taken at the same time as tipranavir. If didanosine is part of your HIV treatment, schedule it two hours before or two hours after you've taken tipranavir. It may help to establish specific schedules for taking each of these medications so it's easier to remember to keep them apart.

Be sure to tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
