What is hydrocortisone?

Hydrocortisone is a type of corticosteroid (steroid) that is used alone or in combination with other drugs to prevent and treat symptoms of inflammation of the skin, organs, muscles, and joints, related to allergies, asthma, arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Stronger hydrocortisones are available through prescription in an oral, topical or liquid form. Low-dose topical creams used to treat common or mild skin irritation are available over-the-counter. Hydrocortisone medications should be used with caution when treating skin or other inflammatory disorders in children.
