What are diclofenac sodium ophthalmic drops?

Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is sold in the U.S. under the brand name Voltaren. It is available by prescription only. Diclofenac works by blocking the action of an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX), and by blocking the production of substances involved in the body's inflammatory response. Diclofenac ophthalmic drops are prescribed to reduce pain, swelling and light sensitivity following cataract or corneal refractive surgery.
