How soon after starting hydrocortisone will my symptoms improve?

How soon your symptoms will improve after you start using hydrocortisone (Anusol-HC, Cortaid, Cortizone and others) depends on the condition you are treating. Hydrocortisone is available in a cream, lotion, ointment and spray for skin treatment. Suppositories, ointment and foam versions are used for an inflammation of the rectum called proctitis or for hemorrhoids. In an enema, the drug is used for ulcerative colitis. A hydrocortisone paste is used to treat sores in the mouth.

Skin irritation, mouth sores, proctitis or hemorrhoids should improve within about seven days. It’s possible for ulcerative colitis symptoms to improve after a few days of enema treatment, but it could take as long as several months. Call your doctor if you don’t see improvement within these time periods.
