What are the side effects associated with taking magnesium sulfate?

Side effects of magnesium sulfate are not common, however, they may occur. Less serious side effects include upset stomach and diarrhea. Serious side effects can occur if a person is allergic to the ingredients in magnesium sulfate or if an overdose has been taken. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include: hives, a skin rash, breathing problems, a tight feeling in the chest and swelling in and around the face, mouth or tongue. Signs of an overdose include: an irregular heartbeat, feeling faint or dizzy, paralysis or weakening of the muscles, uncontrollable sweating and hypothermia. Other side effects due to overdose include: a sharp drop in blood pressure, extreme fatigue and flushing.
