Can anthrax be prevented?

Because anthrax is often contracted from infected livestock, limiting exposure to these animals, and avoiding animal products may help prevent the illness. Making sure animal meat is thoroughly cooked before eating it is also important to help prevent anthrax. Sometimes antibiotics are used as a preventive measure for those who may have been exposed to anthrax spores.

An anthrax vaccine is also available to help prevent the disease. The vaccine is recommended for people with an increased risk for contracting the illness, such as military personnel located in high-risk areas.
