Side effects of aluminum antacids may include constipation. Side effects of magnesium antacids may include diarrhea. These two ingredients are often combined to balance the side effects.

Side effects of calcium carbonate antacids may include increased stomach acid and high blood calcium. Side effects of sodium bicarbonate antacids may include bloating, flatulence, and metabolic alkalosis. Taking sodium bicarbonate with milk or calcium can lead to a condition called the milk-alkali syndrome.
