When brain cells die because of an anoxic brain injury, this can affect the body by disrupting electrochemical impulse transmission. When electrochemical impulse transmission is disrupted, chemical messengers called neurotransmitters become impaired in their activity and their production. Since neurotransmitters control a wide variety of significant physiological processes, any alteration in their activity can have profound effects.
