Can herbal medicines impact anesthesia?

Herbal and dietary products have chemical properties just as medications do. Anything we ingest (eat) or apply (like a salve), can have side effects. Some herbs and supplements interact negatively with anesthesia and may prolong the effects of anesthesia during surgery. Others may increase the risks of bleeding or raise blood pressure. It is important to tell your anesthesiologist which herbs and supplements you currently take prior to surgery and anesthesia.
