What are the side effects of AndroGel?

AndroGel, a prescription testosterone gel for men, can cause serious side effects, including:

  • Breathing difficulty during sleep
  • Swollen, red, or painful legs, which can be a sign of blood clots
  • Worsening of an already enlarged prostate gland, including urine symptoms such as weak flow or inability to urinate, frequent urination during the day or night, feeling an urgent need to urinate, or accidental urination
  • Potential to raise your risk for prostate cancer
  •  Reduced sperm count, in large doses
  • Painful or bigger breasts

More commonly, men who use AndroGel may experience:

  • Skin irritation
  • Acne
  • Raised levels of red blood cells, liver function, cholesterol, or prostate specific antigen
  • Other side effects include:
  • Erections that are more frequent or longer lasting than normal
  • Depression or other mood problems
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Yellowed eyes or skin

AndroGel can also cause problems in women and children who are accidentally exposed:

  • Women may see a steep rise in acne or body hair changes.
  • Children may show aggression, increased sex drive, increased erections, enlargement of the clitoris or penis, or pubic hair that appears early.

AndroGel may cause other side effects. Alert your doctor right away if you notice any side effects.
