How does testosterone replacement therapy treat erectile dysfunction?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Erection problems and a reduced sex drive can sometimes be caused by a low testosterone level. Testosterone replacement therapy is a treatment for erectile dysfunction in men with low testosterone.

Testosterone replacement products available in the US include Androderm, AndroGel, Aveed, Axiron, Delatestryl, Depo-Testosterone, Fortesta, Natesto, Striant, Testim, Testopel, and Vogelxo. Testosterone replacement therapy has been used and studied as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, but none of the available products are FDA-approved for this use.
