What is a histrelin subcutaneous implant?

Histrelin subcutaneous implant is a prescription medication that lowers the amount of the hormones (estrogen and testosterone) in the blood. Histrelin subcutaneous implant may be used to help the symptoms of prostate cancer - although it won't actually cure prostate cancer - as well as central precocious puberty. Precocious puberty occurs when a child experiences signs of puberty at an early age, which is typically defined as puberty that occurs before the age of eight in girls and the age of nine in boys. Histrelin subcutaneous implant is placed underneath the skin, where it delivers a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist, which helps reduce the amount of hormones in the blood. This medication is available in the United States under the names of Supprelin LA or Vantas.
