What is acetaminophen with codeine?

Acetaminophen with codeine is a widely-used prescription medication for the short-term relief of mild to moderate pain. On occasion, a doctor may prescribe it for recurring pain such as migraines. Codeine is a narcotic in the opiod family, but itself is not a pain reliever. In the body, codeine is broken down into morphine, which works on the pain. Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol. Acetaminophen and codeine are believed to have synergistic effects, which means that the combination of both drugs taken together results in more pain relief than either medicine taken alone.  Acetaminophen with codeine is also known as Tylenol with Codeine Elixir, APAP with Codeine, Tylenol #2 Tablets, Tylenol #3 Tablets and Tylenol #4 tablets. It is available in both liquid and tablet forms and is appropriate for use in adults as well as children who are 3 years of age or older.
