How do anabolic steroids work?

Anabolic steroids are a type of chemical message called a hormone. Specifically, they are a steroid hormone. They can cross into a cell and stimulate the making of new proteins. The new proteins increase the mass of tissues, such as muscles. Anabolic steroids build tissues best when combined with high-protein diets. Because they can have serious side effects, anabolic steroids should only be used under your doctor's supervision. Using steroids to improve athletic performance is unsafe, illegal and not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
