What are the treatment options for amnesia?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

The treatment options for amnesia are determined by its underlying cause. The primary focus for amnestic syndrome is to compensate for the memory problem by training the brain to learn and organize information. Transient global amnesia resolves without treatment, whereas Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome responds to intravenous thiamin and fluid treatment. Psychotherapy is the most common treatment for dissociative amnesia but may be combined with such techniques as hypnosis and creative art therapy. Although medications do not treat amnesia, antidepressants may help you handle the personal and social affects of dealing with amnesia.
