Family Practitioner

The treatment for amnesia varies according to the type of amnesia you have and what caused it. For transient global amnesia, there is no real treatment because the condition comes on suddenly and usually goes away in a matter of hours. Dissociative amnesia usually occurs among people who have experienced some form of extreme trauma. Treatment involves psychotherapy and sometimes hypnosis. For more long-term amnestic syndrome, treatment involves occupational therapy to help teach the person how to create and retrieve new memories.
