What is the duration of amenorrhea?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

The duration of amenorrhea depends entirely on its cause. In some cases of primary amenorrhea caused by genetic disorders or birth defects, it is not possible to develop a normal menstruation cycle and amenorrhea can be permanent. Similarly, secondary amenorrhea that is caused by uterine scarring (in which the uterus lining is damaged by surgeries) or premature menopause (in which a woman's egg supply runs out earlier than normal) is usually permanent. Most other causes of secondary amenorrhea can be treated with a healthy diet, hormone medication, or surgery, and the menstrual cycle will return to normal. Pregnant women experience amenorrhea until the baby is born and sometimes through breastfeeding. However, pregnancy can still occur if there is no menstruation cycle during the breastfeeding period.
