What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is more than a century old and teaches clients how to “reeducate” the mind and body so they are conscious of their movement. F. Matthias Alexander (1869-1955), an Australian actor and vocalist, developed his method of breathing reeducation and psychophysical reeducation from a method of vocal training. His technique deals with the psychophysical coordination of the whole person, as excessive stress in one part of the body is usually part of a larger pattern of habitual mal-coordination.

The Alexander Technique helps you to relearn every position you make—from sitting to standing to lying still. The AT practitioner works with you through movement, observing, and working with patterns of coordination--tension and postural patterns, how you think about moving, and active movement. Because you are an active participant, you will learn to re-educate yourself to effectively change bad habits.
