What is bodywork?

Howard S. Smith
Pain Medicine
Bodywork is the umbrella term that describes the hands-on technique of massage, touch, and movement used to align the spine, muscles, and joints to promote the flow of energy. This alternative therapy promotes relaxation, especially with the musculoskeletal system, enhances the circulation of blood and lymph, and relieves muscle tension.

Bodywork includes more than 150 varieties of body manipulation therapies used for relaxation and pain relief. Of these, massage therapy, the scientific manipulation of the body’s soft tissues to normalize those tissues, is perhaps the most popular and with reason. A massage can make you feel incredibly relaxed, boost pain-relieving endorphins, and distract you from any chronic pain or negative feelings. With massage, the therapist applies manual techniques to the muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments with the goal of healing the body. Some of the methods used include rubbing, kneading, tapping, manipulating, holding, friction pressure, taping, and vibrating.

Some new studies confirm that the use of massage therapy for pain-related ailments is growing. In addition, it’s believed that more medical doctors see the value of hands-on healing and are recommending this therapy to those with chronic pain.
Bodywork (also called manual healing therapy) is the umbrella term that refers to a variety of body manipulation therapies used for relaxation and pain relief.  Bodywork includes a myriad of hands-on approaches to working with the body, but massage therapy, the scientific manipulation of the body’s soft tissues to normalize those tissues, is perhaps the most popular.

There are more than 100 different methods classified as massage therapy or bodywork. Swedish massage is the most popular, but other types are quickly growing in demand.
